Livestock Exhibitor Code of Conduct

The Lindsay Exhibition is committed to responsible animal care and treatment. This Code of Conduct outlines what is expected of livestock exhibitors in the handling and exhibiting of all animals involved with the LEX.

This Code has been developed to meet the following objectives:

  • To ensure the health and well being of all animals at the fair
  • To demonstrate an accurate and responsible animal care message to the public
  • To maintain the integrity of all livestock competitions, displays, and sales
  • Livestock and poultry must be transported to and from the LEX in accordance with all humane transport regulations and standards.
  • Loading and unloading must be undertaken using proper equipment and procedures.
  • All animals must be treated and handled in a responsible manner. The well being of the animals shall take precedence over the demands of owners, sellers, buyers, organizers, sponsors, and officials.
  • The care of all animals must be as consistent as possible with their normal schedules and standards. High standards of nutrition, health, sanitation, environment and safety must be met at all times. All handling, housing and veterinary treatment must ensure adequate animal care.
  • Livestock should be prepared with proper training, fitting and grooming prior to the LEX. Excessive disciplining of animals at the LEX is unacceptable.
  • Exhibitors are expected to provide adequate training for anyone handling their livestock. Untrained individuals, including LEX personnel and visitors, should not be permitted to handle animals or equipment.
  • Exhibitors should take every opportunity to enhance public awareness, education and appreciation of proper livestock management and handling practices.

There will be no tolerance for any mistreatment of animals. Any unacceptable exhibitor conduct will be subject to action including possible elimination from the competition(s) and/or exhibit, at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Lindsay Agricultural Society.


RULES and REGULATIONS

  1. All exhibitors must obey the general rules of the Lindsay Exhibition as well as the individual regulations of each division. An exhibitor violating any rule or regulation of this Society, at the discretion of the Board of Directors, may be required to forfeit all prizes won, and may be subject to other penalties as the Board may see fit.
  2. THE LINDSAY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY reserves all rights to its grounds and may restrict or prohibit admittance to the grounds to any person or group of persons without giving reason for such action. Further, the Society may refuse the privilege of exhibiting to any individual without disclosing the reasons for such refusal. All members, exhibitors and others must place animals, cars, trucks and exhibits as instructed by the officials or remove same from the grounds.
  3. MEMBERSHIP: Any persons, on the payment of the annual membership fee of $15.00, shall be enrolled as a member of the Society for the current year and as such shall be entitled to the advantages and privileges conferred on members under the rules of the Exhibition. No membership fee will be retained from winners for their membership for the following year.
  4. OWNERSHIP: Animals or articles entered for competition must be the bonafide property of the person entering them, and with the exception of animals, must have been grown, produced, manufactured or made in the present year by the person or persons entering them. If any doubt arises on the subject, proof will be required. The President, Vice-President or General Manager shall be obliged to cause any exhibitor with reference to whom such doubt exists, to make satisfactory declaration of compliance with the terms of the said Rule. If any person shall enter an article for exhibition as produced or manufactured by himself or herself when it has not really been so, he or she shall forfeit all prizes, which may be awarded to him/her, and shall be precluded from exhibiting in the future.
  5. PRIZES: Should there be only one exhibitor in a class or section the Judges may use their discretion as to awarding any premium. The Judges shall in no case award any prize unless they consider the exhibit actually worthy of such prize. No person shall be a Judge of any article or any class that they are interested in as an exhibitor, agent, employee or otherwise.
  6. ALCOHOL: Consumption of alcohol in the livestock barns is prohibited. Following one warning the exhibitor will forfeit their prize money. This Rule will be strictly enforced.
  7. GLASS CONTAINERS: Absolutely no glass containers will be allowed in the Livestock Buildings or wash racks. Following one warning the exhibitor will forfeit their prize money. This Rule will be strictly enforced.
  8. SMOKING: Absolutely no smoking in the Livestock Buildings, or any other buildings. Following one warning the exhibitor will forfeit their prize money. This Rule will be strictly enforced.
  9. ENTRIES: All entries must be made on entry forms supplied with prize list, including all requested information. PLEASE NOTE: Insurance information is required on entry forms. All entry forms must be in the Lindsay Exhibition Office on or before the closing date as listed in the prize list. Entry fees and administration fee must accompany entry forms.
  10. Entries can be made online at https://www.assistexpo.ca/lindsayex
  11. TRUCK PARKING: Immediately following unloading, all trucks MUST be moved to the stipulated truck parking area. Trucks and trailers not parked where directed may be towed at owner’s expense. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.
  12. FIRE RESTRICTIONS: No one is allowed to leave a vehicle in front of any building by order of the Fire Chief.
  13. DISTURBANCES: An exhibitor who is guilty of creating a disturbance, whether by openly criticizing the Judge or using obscene language to any Judge or Official, shall forfeit the right to any premium and may be suspended by the Society from exhibiting.
  14. FRAUD: Upon the discovery of fraud, deception, or dishonest practice, either in preparation, ownership, or of any misrepresentation concerning any article exhibited which may be affected, or may have been intended to affect the decision of the Judges, the Board of Directors shall have the power to withhold the payment of any prize awarded, and may prohibit any such party or parties from exhibition in any class for one or more years, and may publish the names of such persons or not as deemed most expedient.
  15. COMPLAINTS: Complaints as to errors in premiums must be made known to the General Manager before the close of the Exhibition in order to be considered. No protest will be considered unless a deposit of $25.00 accompanies it. The deposit to become the property of the Exhibition if protest is not sustained,but if sustained, the full amount will be returned to the party who entered the protest.
  16. PREMIUMS: Premiums won in all classes of livestock will be paid by cheque as soon as possible following the Exhibition. Exhibitors who do not receive prize money by November 15th are asked to contact the Exhibition Office at once, submitting itemized statement of prizes claimed. Prize cheques must be cashed by MARCH 1st, 2020.
  17. STRAW: Absolutely NO STRAW will be provided by the Lindsay Exhibition.
  18. SAFETY: While the Directors will take every possible precaution under the circumstances to secure the safety of articles sent to the Exhibition, the owners themselves must take the risk of exhibiting, and should any articles be accidentally injured, lost or stolen, the Directors will give all assistance in their power towards its recovery, but will not make any payments for the value.
  19. LIABILITY INSURANCE: All Exhibitors and participants must carry a Public Liability Insurance (minimum $2 million). The Society will not be responsible for any accidents. Insurance information is required on entry forms.
  20. UNMANAGEABLE ANIMALS: Animals not under sufficient control shall not be allowed to compete.
  21. ATTIRE: Neatness of dress in the ring is required in all divisions.
  22. HUCKSTERING: The Society, under the Agricultural and Horticultural Organizations Act has the power to enforce all its rules and regulations, and the right to prohibit and prevent theatrical, circus, or acrobatic performances, exhibitions or shows, all kinds of gambling, soliciting for funds, the huckstering or trafficking in fruits, goods, wares or merchandise on the Exhibition grounds, or within three hundred yards thereof; and any person who, after due notice of such rules, violates same, will be removed by police officers or officers of the said society, and will be liable to penalty prescribed.
  23. PENALTIES: Every person who contravenes any of the provisions of the Agricultural and Horticultural Organizations Act, or the regulations or any rule or regulation of a Society under subsection 2 of section 19 or who gains admission to the grounds contrary to the rules of the society is guilty of an offense, and on summary conviction is liable to a fine of not more than $100.00
  24. The Lindsay Agricultural Society reserves the right to interpret its own rules and regulations and should any dispute or question arise not provided for in the rules and regulations, the decision of the Board of Directors shall be final.
  25. In the event admissions to the exhibition are reduced due to weather conditions, the Board of Directors reserves the right to reduce the amount of premiums to be paid.
  26. PETS: No pets, except certified service animals are allowed on the Exhibition grounds. No dogs, including Exhibitor’s dogs, are allowed in the barns during the Fair.
  27. A $25.00 service charge will be applied to NSF cheques
  28. All animals must have RFID, CCIA, CSIP, or NLID tags in their ears. Animals who are improperly tagged may be removed or tagged at the discretion of the on-site veterinarian.
  29. Any animal deemed to be improperly castrated will be subject to disqualification by the on-site veterinarian.

RULES & REGULATIONS
1. Only one steer can be entered and/or tagged from each farm unit with the exception of 4-H projects. Horns must not exceed 1½” in length.
2. ALL entries must have Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) or RFID tag in their ear at time of inspection and number must be submitted on entry form.
3. Entries will be limited to market steers from the City of Kawartha Lakes, Counties of Peterborough, Northumberland and the 4-H regions of Durham East & West.
4. ENTRIES MUST BE OWNED BY EXHIBITOR FOR 90 DAYS PRIOR TO SHOW. EXHIBITOR MUST FEED, HOUSE & SHOW ANIMAL.
5. NEW: Exhibitors are responsible for providing feed and feeding their animals while they are at the LEX except as otherwise noted. Animals that are not fed by their owners/designate will be fed by LEX staff and a fee of $10/animal/day will be deducted from sale proceeds. The LEX takes no responsibility for adverse outcomes due to feeding animals in the owner’s absence.
6. All steers must be halter broken and blocked. Any unruly animals will be disqualified from the show.
7. The Exhibition reserves the right to split the class.
8. Steers must not arrive before noon, Wednesday, September 18, 2019, and must be stabled no later than 3:00 pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
9. Steers must weigh between 950 lbs. and 1350 lbs. Steers outside this weight will be eligible to show but the maximum selling weight will be 1350 lbs.
10. Steers will be weighed and culled for stags and horns commencing at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
11. Any animals affected with ringworm or pinkeye will not be admitted.
12. Any animal suspected of drug tampering will be subject to blood testing and subsequent disqualification if tests are found positive. Anyone disqualified for tampering will be disqualified for 5 years.
13. The decision of the judge shall be final.
14. In case of unforeseen discrepancies regarding any of these rules & regulations the Market Livestock Committee’s decision shall be final. The Committee also reserves the right to accept or reject any animal.
15. The top five (5) placing steers will be sold by public auction on Friday, September 20, 2019, commencing at 7:30 pm in the EAST RING (formerly the Goat/Sheep Barn)
16. A commission of 10% of the selling price will be deducted from the proceeds to the exhibitor to help cover the costs of advertising and operating the Sale.
17. Arrangement for payment must be made immediately after the sale.
18. The top 5 steers will be held for display purposes and MUST NOT be removed from the grounds until after 5:00 pm, Sunday, September 23. The Lindsay Exhibition will be responsible for the top 5 steers following the sale until they are delivered to an abattoir.
19. Steers that are sold will be delivered, within 5 working days, to an abattoir of buyer’s choice for slaughter. The Lindsay Exhibition will pay for trucking costs up to 90 km from the fairgrounds.
20. Steers not placing in the top 5 will be released immediately following the show.
21. Exception to any rule may be made by the Chairperson.

RULES & REGULATIONS
1. Entries limited to Market Hogs from the CKL, Counties of Peterborough & Northumberland and the 4-H regions of Durham East & West.
2. Entries must be owned continuously by the Exhibitor, 60 days prior to and including show date. These animals may be exhibited in the Junior & Senior Youth classes. Each farm unit is allowed to enter two (2) animals in class 3702
3. Exhibitors are asked to deliver their animals to the Lindsay Exhibition grounds between 5 pm and 6 pm Wednesday, September 18, 2019. Judging will commence at 7 pm.
4. All Exhibitor’s entries will be housed in one pen on arrival.
5. All entries will be weighed and numbered as soon after arrival as possible.
6. All entries will be inspected upon arrival by a veterinarian or director. Any animals that, in their opinion, show visual evidence of disease, are late castrations or a ridgling will be disqualified.
7. All Hogs must be within the range of 220 - 350 lbs (100 - 158 kg). This weight will be both the show and sale weight. All Measurements will be adjusted to 100 kg live weight basis. Backfat (maximum 150 points) obtained by the following: 150 - (average adjusted fat in mm) x 2
8. In the event of any death losses at the show, prior to animal being sold, such losses will be the responsibility of the owner.
9. 1st to 5th place hogs from class 3702 will be held for display purposes and will be sold in the Market Livestock Sale on Friday, September 20 at 7:30 pm.
10. 10% commission of the selling price will be deducted from proceeds to the exhibitor.
11. Animals entered in the show and not in the top 5 placings may be sold and paid for through the Ontario Pork Producers Marketing Board. OPPMB registration number must be available at ringside at shipping time.
12. Feed will be supplied for swine held over. The Committee will arrange for care.
13. Arrangements for payment must be made immediately after the sale.
14. Exception to any rule may be made by the Chairperson.

2. Limited to 2 entries per farm unit. All exhibits must be owned by the Exhibitor for at least 60 days prior to the Exhibition.
3. Lambs must be on the grounds by 10 am Thursday and will be weighed at 11 am. Lambs may be pre-weighed by the exhibitor prior to 11 am. Only one official weigh for each entry will be allowed. Official weigh in will commence at 11 am.
4. Lambs must be within the weight range of 80 to 110 pounds. This weight will be both the show and sale weight.
5. Both ewes and wethers (registered, grade or “stated” crossbred) are eligible. All eight temporary incisors must be in place.
6. Lambs must be docked, wethers properly altered, sheared within 2 weeks of show day and properly tagged with CCIA tags.
7. All lambs must be shown in the ring by the exhibitor or designated handler and will be shown at 1 pm Thursday September 19, 2019. Animals not placing in the top five (5) will be released at 2 pm.
8. The top 5 placing lambs will be sold live by public auction at the Market Livestock Sale at 7:30 pm on Friday, September 20, 2019 in the EAST RING (formerly the Goat/Sheep Barn)
9. The decision of the judge shall be final.
10.10% commission of the selling price will be deducted from proceeds to the exhibitor.
11. The top 5 lambs will be held for display purposes and MUST NOT be removed from the grounds until after 5 pm, Sunday, September 22, 2019. The Lindsay Exhibition will be responsible for the top 5 lambs following the sale.

6. All kids must be shown in the ring by the exhibitor or designated handler and will be shown at 1 pm Thursday September 19, 2019. Animals not placing in the top five (5) will be released immediately following the show.
7. The decision of the judge shall be final.
8.10% commission of the selling price will be deducted from proceeds to the exhibitor.
9. The top 5 kids will be held for display purposes and MUST NOT be removed from the grounds until after 5 pm, Sunday, September 22, 2019. The Lindsay Exhibition will be responsible for the top 5 kids following the sale.
10. Kids that are sold will be delivered, within 5 working days, to an abattoir of buyer’s choice for slaughter. The Lindsay Exhibition will pay for trucking costs up to 90 km from the fair grounds.
11. Arrangement for payment must be made immediately after the sale.
12. Exception to any rule may be made by the Chairperson.
